Rainbow Warriors 3.5

An International Movement ...

Midnight Sun is the communication hub of an international movement, Rainbow Warriors 3.5, which aims to create a global community of people from all walks of life, ethnicities and beliefs who are willing to put their talents at the service of the Earth and the Community of Life on Earth.

In this regard, in Rainbow Warriors 3.5, we ask interested individuals the following question:

‘What talents do you have and how could you put those talents at the service of the Earth?’

because in this social movement there is room for all kinds of people with all kinds of talents and all kinds of commitments, from those who can only dedicate a few hours a week from their homes, to the most committed people in the environmental and social struggle.

... underpinned by research

The Rainbow Warriors 3.5 proposal stems from Grian Cutanda’s research in Social Sciences, specifically his research on Myths of the Future, which he presented in the first part of The Earth Stories Collection – Volume 1. The concept of ‘Myths of the Future’ was first formulated in Grian’s PhD research at the University of Granada with methodological supervision by Dr Jane Brown from the University of Edinburgh, and will be continued in a third research project that Grian is designing to take place between 2024 and 2025.

And what does 3.5 mean?

The 3.5 is a percentage that has its explanation in a series of investigations in Social Science by Erica Chenoweth from Harvard University on why civil resistance works. Following her first research, together with Maria Stephan [Stephan, M. & Chenoweth, E. (2008). Why civil resistance works. International Security, 33(1), 7-44], which marked a breakthrough in social sciences, Chenoweth has gone on to conduct further research that has led her to assert that ‘There weren’t any campaigns that had failed after they had achieved 3.5% participation during a peak event’. In other words, only when civil society involvement in a social change campaign exceeds the 3.5% threshold of active engagement is the campaign’s success guaranteed. See a report on a BBC article by David Robson’s (2019 May 14).The ‘3.5% rule’: How a small minority can change the world. BBC Future. Available here).

And this is the goal of the Rainbow Warriors 3.5 movement, a difficult goal indeed, but one that, if Grian’s developments on the Myths of the Future are taken into account, might be achievable.

Explanatory note

Rainbow Warriors 3.5 has no connection whatsoever with the Rainbow Gatherings or the Rainbow Family, nor do we agree with the cultural appropriation that goes on in these circles. Nor do we have any direct relationship with Greenpeace and its Rainbow Warriors nomenclature, used in their beginnings, nor with the collective of the same name that promotes LGBT rights globally (whose rainbow, on the other hand, only has six colours, not including the sky blue colour), although that does not prevent us from sympathising with them and even collaborating if the occasion arises.
